Replication or Duplication – which to choose
Replication is the traditional process of “pressing” discs in production lines that make a new disc in seconds. The vast majority of commercially available DVDs are replicated. A variety of machines are used to create a glass master, create metal stamping masters, stamp substrates in hydraulic molds, apply reflective layers, bond substrates together, and print on disc. Replication has its advantages. It offers 100% player compatibility, is more cost-effective when making more than a 500 units, and discs have more options for larger capacity
Duplication involves “burning” onto recordable discs. For projects requiring less than 500 discs, it can be a cost-effective alternative to replication. Unlike manufactured DVDs, the discs produced in this manner are made from recordable DVD-R or DVD+R media, the same as the discs you use in your DVD recorder. DVD-Rs are not 100% compatible with all players. The advantages of DVD-R duplication are availability of short runs and quick turnaround times.
